As we approach the holidays, we tend to see this period as a time to give back to our communities. During this time of year, charities see a huge spike in donations. To many people, donating cash is their gesture of generosity because they see it as a direct way to help the less fortunate. While charities are delighted and grateful to receive the donations, there are plenty of other ways to give back that bring just as much joy to the receivers.
- Participate in a Giving Tree program. Many organizations and set up Christmas trees with request cards on them. They are often located in the lobby of their building. The requests are wishes from less fortunate people, usually children. Sometimes, they wish for a specific type of toy or item of necessity that will make their lives a little happier or more convenient. By purchasing one of those items and leaving the gift with the corresponding card under the tree, you will have granted the wish of one ecstatic stranger. Schools often set up Giving trees or paper snowflakes with teacher requests for school supplies they need – which is a great way for parents to say thank you to the teachers who are making a difference in their children’s lives.
- Volunteer at an organization you care about. Giving your time to help your favorite nonprofit execute their mission on a day to day basis can be as meaningful if not more meaningful than writing a check. You’ll make new friends, lend a hand to people who share your values, and learn more about the organization itself as an insider.
- Consign or donate one item for every new piece you buy. I’d be lying if I said that most of us can resist buying something for themselves during the holidays. While everyone deserves to treat themselves to things that make them happy, consider consigning or donating a pre-owned item for every new item so that others can discover and re-love something that you also loved. This is a win-win method because you can get prevent clutter in your home and at the same time allow people with lesser means to enjoy your goods at a lower price.
- Offer your professional services pro bono for a day. Pick one day during the holiday season to open your business or offer your expertise to anyone and everyone at no cost. Not only will you make the days of people who want but usually can’t afford your services, you will also attract curious customers who want to try before they buy. If they like it, they will become future business prospects.
- Visit people who could use some company. Nobody likes feeling lonely, especially during the holidays because it’s a time to celebrate togetherness. Nursing homes are full of people who either have little or no family for companionship. Make arrangements to brighten up their holidays with a meaningful visit that reminds them they are important and worthy of attention.
Now that you know cash donation isn’t the only way to make a difference, go forth and spread joy in your own thoughtful way this season!
