The New England Aquarium recently opened a “retirement island” for its elderly African penguins. Separated by a mesh gate from the younger penguins, this “country club for older animals” is now home for the lucky penguins who need more attentive care and a slower pace of life. These senior seabirds, half of which are older than the bird’s typical life expectancy, now enjoy an age-adjusted space with gentler slopes, fish with hydration boosts, and even acupuncture.
