Each November, consumers across the country are bombarded with advertisements announcing the hottest new Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. Last year, Americans spent more than $658 billion on retail purchases during November and December. This obsession with sales highlights the growing issue of overconsumption in America, so much so that each year it continues to creep further and further into interrupting our Thanksgiving celebrations, a holiday that ironically asks us to be grateful for what we have in our lives.
Luckily, more impactful shopping days have popped up following post-Black Friday. Small Business Saturday, an initiative of American Express, encourages shoppers to visit small business to support their local stores. And, Giving Tuesday asks consumers all over the world to donate to nonprofit organizations that are tackling critical issues in our country and the world.
But, what about Sunday? DoneGood, a start-up that helps online shoppers make ethical choices, is launching the first Shop for Good Sunday on November 26, driving people to support companies that are doing good for people and the planet.
Participating companies support a variety of causes, from protecting the environment to championing fair trade, and include clothing, accessories, and home good brands. Each company has a cause attached to its mission. For example, Groceries Apparel is made with 100% organic and recycled materials, while SLATE + SALT work closely with small social enterprises to support the fair trade movement.
Not only will your purchases support brands that are committed to causes, but additionally, 100% of the revenue generated through the DoneGood platform will be donated to Oxfam America and 1% for the Planet.
Teak is proud to be a participating partner in the Shop for Good Sunday brand in its inaugural year. As a certified B Corp, founding member of the Boston chapter of Conscious Capitalism, and members of the Climate Action Business Association and Sustainable Business Network of Massachusetts, we are excited to see the movement grow. By purchasing gifts from purposeful brands this holiday season, you will not only delight your loved ones, but will make a meaningful impact. If we all use our purchasing power, no matter how big or small, for good, we can make the world a better, cleaner, safer, more beautiful place.
