The Wall Street Journal sent longtime art critic Judith H. Dobrzynski to visit Gloucester last month to review the Cape Ann Museum’s monumental “Avery, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea” exhibition. Her review, beautiful in print, affirms the significance of the story, unearthed by its curator, Eliza Rathbone, that the three notable artists, Milton Avery, Adolf Gottlieb, and Mark Rothko, spent many summers together from the 1930s to the 1950s, inspiring one another’s art and careers on Cape Ann.
